 "No one is as fragile as a woman but no one is fragile as a man"


Ehrlich’s contrast between what a cowboy is physically seen and the vulnerability their jobs and roles truly require are what give them strength. Society’s interpretation of toughness over time has been misinterpreted into something people only look for on the outside. In reality, for people like cowboys, their strength comes from the vulnerability they hold with their animals. They sustain animals, care for them, and have had to watch young animals die. This amalgamation of physical strength and vulnerability work with each other to create a new kind of strength that is truly tough rather than a fake only strong version that people assume is true.


Not only do they have to constantly nurture and care for living creatures, but they are the constant mercy of the weather. Even in the worst of storms or coldest of days, a cowboy will do what they must in order to sustain the lives of the animals who can’t protect themselves in their scenario. However, no amount of physical strength can control this weather. The ability to be able to accept the fact of powerlessness is a level of courage that no physical strength can encompass.


Just as society has labeled women as fragile, Elrich uses cowboys to showcase that men carry that same fragility. This so-called “feminine” trait is not something that makes them weak at all, it is the very thing that makes cowboys the strongest.

    I appreciate that you pointed out that vulnerability underlies true strength. Often, we rely so much on physical power to represent someone's strength that we forget how difficult it is to overcome our mental blocks to show true vulnerability. Being able to proudly showcase that fragility is truly what makes someone strong. Thank you for this point and for nicely expanding on Ehrlich's points with this piece!

    Great blog Advik! I really liked how you showed that real strength comes from vulnerability and not toughness through cowboys. I also love all the examples that you gave for what cowboys have as their duties and what they have to go through. It really helped me visualize your point.

What is Gatsby even about?

  The past week while we’ve been reading Gatsby , everything always felt so deep and complicated. While I was reading at home, I’d often have to reread some parts and check over things on the internet just to make sure I interpreted a detail the right way. After all that, I’d still get a 2 out of 4 on the Gatsby quiz because I forgot something. In class, we brought up the idea of how Fitzgerald’s purpose for writing The Great Gatsby was to critique the “American Dream” and bring up how people behaved back then, but once we put this into a skit form, it felt so surreal. By converting everything into modern-day slang, adding our own slight personal touches, and acting it out, The Great Gatsby went from being the most sophisticated thing to comedic and almost a little dumb.   A little while ago I was at a MUN conference when someone randomly came up to me. He started making small talk, but I could instantly feel the fake energy radiating off of him. Obviously, I had to match it,  as one of the biggest aspects of Model UN deals with having to suppress your real personality and appear friendly and connected to everyone. This fake conversation, which I thought would end normally, had an ending that was a first for me. He pulled out his phone, and I expected maybe what's your Instagram or let's make a group chat with people from the committee . Instead, he opened up the LinkedIn app, stuck his phone at me, and asked me to type in my LinkedIn. I couldn't help but break character and make a face when he asked.
